NOTES FROM: Richard Cavendish, The Black Arts (New York: Capricorn Books, 1967).
Names and Numbers
Numerology is derived from the ancient conviction that the name of a thing contains the essence of its being. Names are used to identify things.
Instead of providing a long an detailed description of the characteristics of an animal, for example, it is more convenient to say, this is a snake. The name sums up the characteristics which make the snake what it is; its name is its identity.
A name was thought of as a miniature image of what is named, which can be used as a substitute for the thing itself. The same applies to your own name, such as Mary Smith.
Mary Smith is your given name, which is for ordinary, everyday use. It is the belief in some cultures, both ancient and modern, that you also possess another, secret, name, which is your 'real' name.
Your 'real' name' is so secret you may not even know it yourself! (It may have been whispered into your ear by your mother when you were a baby.)
To know your 'real' name is to have power over you.
The 'real' names of god, demons, and angels are kept secret.
The magical significance of names persists today. Parents take trouble in choosing a name for a child, aware that the choice will affect the child's character.
Because your name distinguishes you from other people, it can be analysed to find out many things about you. This task is made easier by reducing names to numbers.
Numerology is the analysis or interpretation of these numbers. The system of numerology, however, is not consistent because of the lack of agreement among numerologists on the number value to be given each letter.
There are two main systems of numerology.
- The 'Modern' system, in which the letters are simply given a number equivalent from 1 to 9

- The 'Hebrew' system, which employs the Hebrew alphabet, or alefbet, with the addition of some Greek letters. Under the 'Hebrew' system, the alphabetic order is not normal and the number 9 is not used.

Finding your Numerological Identity
The method for finding your number is the same for both systems. First, write your name and provide the number equivalents for each letter.
For Mary Smith, using the 'Hebrew' system, the numbers total 25. Add the 2 and the 5 for the total 7. The number of the name Mary Smith is 7.

The number found by this method is the most important number contained in your name.
It shows your character and personality, and the type of life you will lead.
In the case of Mary Smith, according to Cavendish:
"Seven is the number of the scholar, the philosopher, the mystic, and the occultist. They like to withdraw from the maddening bustle of the world and be alone to meditate and reflect. Dignified, reserved, self-controlled, serious, they have no patience with foolishness or frivolity. They care nothing for money and very for little physical comfort. They have powerful and penetrating intellects, but there is also a dreamy side to their character, highly imaginative, sometimes fey and strange. They are often extraordinarily bad at explaining themselves and their ideas and they tend to dislike being questioned and argued with. They are sometimes deeply unhappy people, disappointed, aloof, superior, witheringly sarcastic."
Your name also contains other numbers as well. You can find the number total of all the vowels, and the total for all the consonants.
The number found by adding the vowels is your Heart Number. It reveals your inner character, the person you are at heart.
The number found by adding the consonants is your Personality Number. It privides indications about your outer personality, your behaviour and manner, and the impression you make on other people.
