BIBLIOGRAPHY


The Course

    A survey of the art of ancient Greece from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period. The course also examines the role played by archaeologists and art historians in the reconstruction of the past and the ways in which Greek art has been interpreted and explained in the modern era.

    Emphasis is placed on examining the visual characteristics of the art and on the interpretation of those characteristics within their historical and cultural context.

Student Responsibilities

  • Active class participation, which includes being prepared for each class, and taking part in discussion.
  • One Online Paper (equivalent of 10-15 pages, plus bibliography)
  • One Take-Home Midterm Exam
  • One Final Exam


    RESEARCH PAPER
    You are required to write a research paper on a selected topic. The paper (the equivalent of 10-15 pages, plus bibliography and Internet links) will be posted online at your own website. (click HERE for paper topic suggestions)

    Schedule for the Paper

    • Thursday, September 22: Topic Selection

    • Thursday, October 27: Preliminary Bibliography and Internet links due online by 3:00 p.m.

    • Thursday, November 17: Final Paper due online by 3:00 p.m.

    Your paper should comprise a discussion and analysis of your chosen topic. It should be researched as extensively as possible using both library and online resources. Wherever possible, your text should be "annotated" with links to further information.

    You are required to submit for your Bibliography at least five library sources you have used (books, periodical articles; but no encyclopedias or dictionaries), plus at least five Internet sites

    A list of websites with additional information should be added. Include as many illustrations (either actual images, or links to images) as you wish. For those of you who have not written a paper for an art history course before and are unclear about what is expected, please come and see me.


    FINAL EXAM
    The Final Exam, to be taken in class on Thursday December 8, will be in four parts. All images will be selected from the List of Study Images (drawn from Pedley, Chapters 6-10)

    • Part One: Image Identifications
      Fifteen (15) images will be projected each for one minute (15 minutes). In each case, provide the following information:

      • LOCATION (if in situ):
      • PERIOD:

    • Part Two: Image Essays
      Four (4) images will be projected. In each case, identify and, writing in essay form, tell me everything you know about each one (self-timed, approximately 10 minutes each: total 40 minutes).

    • Part Three: Multiple Choice
      Select the correct answer to ten words or terms (self-timed, approximately 5 minutes).

    • Part Four: Identify the Parts
      Identify the indicated parts on three diagrams of Greek temple types (self-timed, approximately 10 minutes).


Grading
  • Class participation = 10%
  • Paper = 30%
  • Midterm Exam = 30%
  • Final Exam = 30%
