THE COURSE AND REQUIREMENTS

The Course

    An introduction to the art of the High Renaissance and Mannerist periods in Italy. Examples of painting, sculpture, and some architecture produced in Italy between approximately 1500 and 1600 will be examined.

Student Responsibilities

  • Active class participation, which includes being prepared for each class, and taking part in discussion.
  • One Report (9-10 machine-printed pages, with footnotes and bibliography) presented in class with web-based images
  • One Midterm Take-Home Exam
  • One two-part Final Exam
    1. The in-class portion of the Final Exam (Tuesday, December 7) consists of two parts
      1. 10 images will be projected, each for 30 seconds. Name the ARTIST in each case
      2. three images will be projected, each for 15 minutes. In each case
        • identify the artist
        • give the name or title of the image
        • give a date or dates (to within 5 years)
        • write a essay about what you know about the image
      Both the identifications and the images will be selected from Hartt & Wilkins
    2. The take-home essay portion of the Final Exam is due at my office by 5:00 p.m. Monday, December 13. Essay topics will be handed out in class on Tuesday, December 7.

Grading

  • Class participation = 10%
  • Report = 30%
  • Midterm Exam = 30%
  • Final Exam = 30%
